Currently, this is the entire collection for Thomas Griscom, Director of the Office of Communications for nearly two years near the end of the Reagan administration.There is no ďofficeĒ records collection for the Office of Communications.Administrative material is scattered though out the collections of David Gergen, Patrick Buchanan, Thomas Griscom and Mari Maseng. Most of the routine administrative material regarding personnel, parking, etc for the Office of Communications past 1987 can be found in the Mari Maseng collection.She was the last director of this office and maintained these files, including Griscom material.


This collection is arranged in three series: SERIES I: Washington Summit Ė 1987; SERIES II: Presidentís Weekly Update; and SERIES III:Subject File.


SERIES I: WASHINGTON SUMMIT Ė 1987 (0.2 l.ft.; Box 1)


This series consists of material related to the planning, scheduling, advance work, and subjects covered at the Washington Summit held December 7-10, 1987. This summit was the third meeting between President Reagan and General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev of the Soviet Union.The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty was signed at this Summit. The Summit was originally planned for some time in 1986 and was later pushed back due to the meeting Reykjavik, Iceland.This series contains material for the original planning of the Summit.




This series consists of Thomas Griscomís copies of the weekly update provided to the President. The Weekly Update was a standard packet given to the President each week including his schedule for the week and for upcoming weeks; press reactions to the news of the previous week, and weekly summaries from most major White House offices on the activities of those offices.Griscomís copies are from February 1987-January 1988 and are not complete for that time period.The material is arranged chronologically by update.


SERIES III: SUBJECT FILE (0.9 l.ft; Box 2-4)


This series consists of material related to communication functions and administrative material for the Office of Communications. There is material related to the visit by Secretary Shultz to Helsinki in March 1988; strategies for a successful nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court; general strategies and policy ideas for 1987 regarding budget reform, deficit reduction, drug abuse policies, and general domestic and national security legislation, Iran and the Iran-Contra public affairs plan; and published reports on various issues including Congressional voting records on aid to the Nicaraguan resistance.The remaining material is related to the administrative functions of Griscom as head of the Office of Communications including White House staff manuals; personnel files; and Griscom travel files.
