White House Operations, Office of 1987-1989 (Special Assistant to the President for White House Operations)


Unlike previous Directors of White House Operations, Claire O’Donnell did not also have the title of Director, Office of Administration.  In August 1987, O’Donnell took over as head of White House Operations in a revamped White House staff under new Chief of Staff, Howard Baker.  She reported to the Assistant to the President for Operations, Rhett Dawson. Dawson took on more of an Executive Secretary role and divided up the day-to-day running of White House Operations and the Office of Administration between two different people – Claire O’Donnell and Gordon Riggle. This collection consists of material created by and for Claire O’Donnell as the head of White House Operations.  The Library currently does not have a Presidential Personnel or earlier White House Operations collection for O’Donnell.


O'Donnell served as the administrative assistant for Christopher Hicks and then, Jonathan Miller, who each held the dual title of head of White House Operations and Director of the Office of Administration at the White House.  Ms. O'Donnell, like her bosses, worked in both offices simultaneously.  Some of her work product can be found in the office files for the White House Operations Office.


Claire O’Donnell currently serves as Deputy Assistant to the Vice-President and Director of Operations.
